Our Hospital

Since the first tuberculosis patients arrived in Papworth Everard in 1918, Royal Papworth Hospital - as it is now known - has developed a reputation for excellence in heart and lung medicine.

Today, we treat around 50,000 patients each year, perform more heart and lung transplants than any other UK centre and have the best survival rates in the UK for cardiac surgery.

Our hospital has been designed by our clinicians with our patients in mind ensuring we included many features that enhance our patient care. These include:

  • Five operating theatres, five catheter laboratories (for non-surgical procedures) and two hybrid theatres
  • Six inpatient wards
  • 310 beds, including a 46-bed critical care unit and 24 day beds
  • Mostly en-suite, individual rooms for patients
  • A centrally-located outpatients unit offering a wide range of diagnostic and treatment facilities
  • A link corridor to Addenbrookes Hospital

Partnership working is at Royal Papworth’s core; to achieve excellence, hospitals need to reach out and build strong clinical relationships across organisational boundaries throughout the globe and access the very best training and education.

The location of the hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus provides the UK with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to develop a world-class research institute for heart and lung disease (HLRI) in partnership with the University of Cambridge expanding opportunities on which the treatments of tomorrow will be based. This facility opened in May 2022.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) announced on the 16th October that it has rated Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as ‘outstanding’ overall, and across all five of the CQC domains; safe, caring, effective, responsive, and well-led.

This is the first time ever that an NHS hospital trust has achieved an ‘outstanding’ rating across the five key questions that the CQC asks when it inspects hospitals. It is also the first NHS acute Trust to have gained an ‘outstanding’ rating in the ‘Safe’ category.

Royal Papworth Charity provides grants to support the hospital in a variety of ways which helped achieve the outstanding rating across all five domains. With your support we can continue to provide this vital funding.
