Virtual Fundraising

Like many other Charities, Royal Papworth Charity has postponed a number of our scheduled fundraising events and activities in line with government guidance.

With that in mind we need you now more than ever. We are inviting you to join in with new, fun and safe fundraising ideas. Together we can continue to support Royal Papworth Hospital in its mission to transform the way heart and lung disease is treated now and in the future.

As our lives have never been so different, now is the time to get creative, challenge yourself and pledge whatever you can to Royal Papworth Charity.

How to Fundraise Virtually

Choose your challenge

We have some inspiration listed for you below, but we encourage you to get creative and think outside the box, we all have different interests and skillsets so this is an opportunity to you to harness these attributes and get fundraising!

Set up your fundraising page

It is super easy to set up a fundraising page on our website or other fundraising platforms such as JustGiving or GoFundMe, if you need any assistance we are always on hand to help with this.

Set your target

set a fundraising target that you would like to meet, having a target allows you and your friends to work towards. If there is a particular area of the Hospital you would like to support, we would love to work with you to set up a goal that could provide specialist equipment, services. For instance, the RAF ALI Cell decided to support our Critical Care Unit, which was the busiest Critical Care Unit in the East of England during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic with their #100kinMayUk Challenge. They choose the target £3499, the cost of a lifesaving ECMO circuit, used in CCU to treat those that need the highest level of medical intervention. We were inspired with how well they did, with many members of the ALI Cell completing their challenge early on in the month of May. In total, they raised £4,216 on their Justgiving page.

Spread the word

Share on your social media channels, through word of mouth, with friends and family, the more people that know the better! Encourage them to donate or even set up their own fundraising challenge. Make sure to tag us on social media and use the hashtags #RoyalPapworthCharity and #VirtualFundraising so we can see your wonderful virtual fundraising!

Get fundraising

Launch your virtual challenge, make sure you’re friends and family are awareness of when your challenge is taking place and how they can donate to support you. Justgiving now has a brilliant new live streaming option so that you can stream your challenge directly onto your justgiving page, allowing people can donate as they tune in.

Virtual Distance Challenge

Give that daily exercise a purpose! Pick an activity from our virtual distance challenge list or create your own fundraising challenge in aid of Royal Papworth Charity.

Using a tracking app like Strava, you can track your distance and upload your progress to your JustGiving page as you complete your challenge. Why not do a challenge as a household or virtually with your friends as a relay?

  • Extreme: Walk or run 4 miles per day over three weeks. Your total distance will equal 84 miles which is the distance of Hadrian’s Wall.
  • Intermediate: Walk or run 3 miles per day for three weeks. Your total distance will equal 64 miles which is the distance from Royal Papworth Hospital to London.
  • Beginner: Walk 7.6 miles a week for three weeks. Your total distance will equal 23 miles which is the distance of the National 3 peaks challenge.
  • Walk with Nurses: If you are planning on taking on the 2.6 challenge, why not take that one step further and walk 3.6 miles a day, the average distance an NHS nurse walks during their shift. You will need to walk approximately 8000 steps in your home to achieve this.

Pippa Kent, a double lung transplant recipient, has already completed her own virtual distance challenge, with initial plans to cycle 100km between Royal Brompton and Royal Papworth, the two Hospitals that helped save her life, in light of COVID-19, she altered her plans and cycled the distance in her back garden! She raised a phenomenal £8566 and definitely proved that being at home doesn't have to stop you from completing challenges and achieving your goals!

Your Own Challenge

Set up a challenge that is tailored to you, indoors, outdoors, singing and dancing, painting or pilates, walking, running or cycling any distance which you find manageable.

Debbie Gilbey, live streamed an exhausting 12 hour exercise fundraiser, sharing 12 different fitness classes for people to get involved in and show their support by donating. Debbie exceeded her target by raising a fantastic £1727 in aid of Royal Papworth Charity.

Entertain your Friends and Family

Papworth Gig Nights

All ages, abilities and genres are welcome to hold their own Papworth Gig Night at home in aid of Royal Papworth Charity. Whether you are a musical family that can make up a classical quartet or an 80’s loving karaoke queen, we would love to hear from you to book in your night.

Live stream or pre-record your performance, we can promote your evening and send a text-to-donate number for you to share with any friends that would like to donate to Royal Papworth Charity whilst you sing that favourite track.

If you are looking for inspiration, Royal Papworth Charity hosted a series its own virtual concert evenings, with our Quarantunes broadcasts. We broadcasted 5 evenings of music, from local and up and coming musicians, to bring together the community while we are all still currently separated- the broadcasts are still available for viewing on our Facebook page.

Quiz Night

Bring your own version of Pointless or the Chase to you and your friends. Organise a quiz night in aid of Royal Papworth Charity and to put your knowledge test while also having fun and socialising with friends.

Comedy Night

Have you got some good puns lined up that you want to share? Bring some laughter into people’s lives by hosting your own comedy night, encourage your friends to also get involved and create a whole evening of amusement.

Virtual Class

You may be a master of a skill that people are dying to learn, whether you’re a pro baker or the next Pablo Picasso, share your skills and teach others with your own Virtual Classes, you could charge a small fee or encourage people to donate for taking part in aid of Royal Papworth Charity.

Classes could include:

  • Cooking or baking
  • Art lessons
  • Music lessons
  • Exercise such as yoga, aerobics and even a dance class!

Virtual Coffee Morning

Coffee mornings and catch ups are still off the cards while we still maintain social distancing but this doesn’t mean you need to miss out on your chin wag and a cuppa. Host a virtual coffee morning for you and a friend, using online chat services like zoom, skype, WhatsApp and Facetime, there are plenty of options for you to connect with friends.

We have put together a ‘Brew Together’ pack, which will provide everything you need for the perfect virtual coffee morning- tea, coffee, cake, a Royal Papworth Charity mug and a heart sent directly to you and your friend for just £25.

Money raised from the Brew Together pack goes straight to support the world leading cardiothoracic medicine at Royal Papworth Hospital.

We encourage you to raise as much as you can and have lots of fun but most importantly, please make sure you keep safe and follow the current government guidelines on social distancing.

We are here to help you. If you need materials, advice or some ideas please call one of the Charity Team on 01223 639950 or email us at papworth.charity@nhs.net

Share the pictures of your fundraising with us and don't forget to use the hashtags #RoyalPapworthCharity and #VirtualFundraising.
