Celebrating 30 Years of Transforming Lives and Building Brighter Futures

In July 2025, the Charity marked a momentous milestone - 30 years of transforming lives, inspiring hope, and building brighter futures.

Why Now? Why This?

With the scale of the challenges facing the NHS, our charity is needed more than ever. We fund projects that go above and beyond what our national health service is able to provide. Focussed on what our hospital, patients and staff need.

The spaces we heal in matter. They can uplift or isolate, soothe or stress. And now, more than ever, our patients, their families, and our dedicated NHS staff need environments that match the excellence of our care.

Today’s healthcare landscape is more pressured than ever. Our patient needs have grown more complex. The average length of inpatient stays is nearly 10 days with some patients waiting for transplants for up to 12 months. As a leading heart and lung hospital, many patients travel long distances for specialist care, often staying far from home. Families need private, comfortable spaces to rest and connect.

Our staff, responsible for the quality of care of our patients, face growing pressure, with 43% reporting work-related stress, higher than national NHS figures of 41%. Nearly ¾ of our staff have found their work emotionally exhausting with 68% feeling burnt out at times.

Our hospital has grown, our care has evolved, and our community of support has never been stronger. This fund will unlock the next level of care by enhancing physical spaces, improving comfort and dignity, and creating more welcoming, therapeutic spaces.

A unique opportunity

To commemorate this legacy, we are proud to launch the 30th Anniversary Fund, which will enable us to reshape the physical and emotional environment at Royal Papworth for patients, families, volunteers, and staff alike.

This is a unique opportunity to help us reimagine and reinvigorate the spaces at Royal Papworth to create calm, give hope and provide the right support to those in their most critical time of need.

What the 30th Fund Will Support

Patient and Family Day Rooms

At the heart of this campaign is a plan to transform multiple key day rooms. These essential areas offer patients and their families the chance to rest, gather strength, and share precious moments. With upgrades including modern furnishings, recliner chairs, and tranquil design, we aim to provide dignity and comfort during life- changing experiences.

Outdoor Spaces

We’ll invest in healing, green environments both at the hospital and at Kingfisher House—spaces where patients and loved ones can breathe, reflect, and reconnect.

Green spaces within the NHS environment are crucial for both patient recovery and staff well-being. They offer a multitude of benefits, including stress reduction, improved mental health, and even faster physical recovery.

Staff Rest facilities

The hospital is one of the best in the country and is known for the quality of care its patients receive. This is down to the compassion and expertise of our hardworking staff. But it can be stressful and 41% of NHS staff feel unwell due to work-related stress. Having dedicated spaces where staff feel safe to rest and recharge is essential not just for their wellbeing, but for the wellbeing of their patients.

A brand-new Charity Hub

This public-facing hub will provide a welcoming space that supports visitors, volunteers, and staff alike with comfortable seating, digital access, charging stations, and thoughtful amenities that reflect our commitment to compassionate care.

The space will be equipped with a range of patient information in digital and physical formats to help incoming and outgoing patients access the right information for their condition or treatment journey. Working in collaboration with leading medical information service providers the charity hub will provide a central point in the hospital to communicate and engage with patients and friends and families.

Join Us – The Time Is Now

This anniversary is more than a celebration; it is a commitment to the future.

We invite you to stand with us as we launch the 30th Anniversary Fund - a critical, impactful campaign to uplift the spaces where lives are changed every day.

Together, we can build brighter spaces and ensure brighter futures for all who walk through our doors.
